The Politics of Defacement
OHM Berlin
May & September 2024

Presented as a live audio-textual object at OHM Berlin — a nocturnal sound gallery affiliated with the Atonal Festival and Tresor — Stratagem’s “Politics of Defacement” was developed as a conceptual response to the venue’s unique sonic ecology.

Here, text did not merely accompany sound; it listened to it. The libretto emerged within the low hum and psychoacoustic grain of the club, allowing ambient vibrations to puncture its delivery. Repetition, echo, and delay became both structural and performative. A textual hum.

The piece was co-written with the environment. It registers the atmosphere of techno-industrial space as a maternal field, resonant with the project’s broader interests in the indistinct, the caring edge, and ambient authorship. Textual-objects were read aloud, sometimes whispered, into the spatiality of OHM. The delivery—fragile, staggered—invoked the logic of the cleaning lady.

MECCANISMO requires complicity in the production of meaning.
MECCANISMO violates the functionality of artistic languages in relation to the cultural system and calls into question their communicative potential without defining roles and objectives.
MECCANISMO frees the ritual from replication and representation
by claiming it as a practice of rupture and resistance.
MECCANISMO produces noise.
